Titanium Rough Machining & Precision Machining
Titanium processing typically involves two stages: rough machining and precision machining. Rough machining removes excess material to achieve approximate shapes and sizes, while precision machining focuses on tight tolerances, smooth surfaces, and detailed geometries. Together, they ensure both processing efficiency and final product quality.
Rough machining is the initial stage of material removal in the metalworking process. Its primary goal is to eliminate the majority of excess material from a workpiece quickly and efficiently, preparing it for the final shaping and finishing steps in precision machining.
Rough Machining
Purpose: Quickly remove excess material and prepare for finishing.
Common Processes:
Rough Turning-Large-depth cutting for cylindrical parts
Rough Milling-Removing stock from flat or contoured surfaces
Hot Shearing / Saw Cutting-Sectioning raw titanium bars, slabs, or ingots
Rough Drilling-Creating initial holes before finishing operations
Plasma or Flame Cutting-Fast profile cutting of plates and billets
Post-Forging Surface Removal-Removing scale or flash after forging
Titanium precision machining involves high-accuracy dimensional control and the shaping of titanium materials into complex geometries through turning, milling, drilling, grinding, tapping, wire cutting, and other CNC processes. Given titanium alloys’ high strength, low modulus of elasticity, and poor thermal conductivity, machining requires specialized tooling, optimized parameters, and effective cooling systems to achieve efficiency and precision.
Precision Machining
Purpose: Achieve final dimensional accuracy, tolerance, and surface finish.
Common Processes:
CNC Turning- Suitable for round parts like shafts, rings, and flanges.
CNC Milling-Ideal for components with complex surfaces and features.
Precision Grinding-For fine surface finish and tight tolerances, e.g., plates and sealing surfaces.
Drilling / Tapping-Precision holes and threads for connectors or structural assemblies.
Wire EDM-Processes intricate contours and tight features, suitable for thin sheets and fine parts.
Polishing / Deburring
