ASTM B337-Seamless and Welded Titanium Pipe

Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Pipe

ASTM B337 covers seamless and welded straight-seam titanium and titanium alloy pipe for corrosive service, primarily in chemical and marine environments. This specification allows both seamless and welded forms, typically with larger diameters and wall thicknesses than ASTM B338 tubes.

1. Grades Covered

This specification includes commercially pure (CP) titanium and alloyed grades:

CP Titanium (Unalloyed): Gr. 1, 2, 3, 7, 11, 12, 16, 17, 26, 27

Alloyed Grades: Gr. 5 (Ti-6Al-4V), Gr. 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V), Gr. 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI), Gr. 28, Gr. 29

The specific grade depends on required mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

2. Dimensions and Size Range

Property

Range (Typical)

Outside Diameter (OD)

1" to 24" (25.4 mm – 610 mm) or larger by agreement

Wall Thickness

Schedule 5S to 40S or custom (typically thicker than tube)

Length

Single, double random, or cut-to-length sections

3. Tolerances

Standard tolerances unless otherwise specified:

Parameter

Tolerance

OD Tolerance

±0.75% (minimum ±0.25 mm)

Wall Thickness

–0 / +15% of nominal

Straightness

1.5 mm per 1000 mm length

Length Tolerance

Per agreement or ±3.18 mm

Tensile testing is required on each lot (for seamless pipe) or coil/plate source (for welded pipe).

5. Testing Requirements

Tensile Test-Required on a per-heat and per-size basis.

Flattening Test-For welded pipe to test seam integrity.

Hydrostatic Test or Nondestructive Examination (NDE)-Leak-tightness test required unless waived.

Visual Inspection-Surface and weld inspection for cracks, oxidation, inclusions.

Chemical Analysis-Must conform to ASTM grade limits.

6. Chemical Composition

Must conform to the composition limits of the relevant grade from ASTM B348 or B265.

7. Applications

ASTM B337 pipes are used in applications requiring high corrosion resistance, including:

Chemical processing plants (HCl, NaClO₃, bleach lines)

Desalination systems (brine piping)

Offshore oil/gas systems

Power plant condensers

Shipbuilding and marine structures

Heat recovery systems

8. Marking and Certification

Each pipe must be legibly marked with:

ASTM B337

Grade

Manufacturer

Heat number or lot

OD and wall thickness

Production method (Seamless or Welded)

Test reports are typically provided per EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 requirements.
