Standard Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Wire
ASTM B863 covers titanium and titanium alloy wire for industrial, medical, and aerospace use. The wire may be supplied in straight lengths, spools, or coils, and is used for:
Welding filler metal
Springs
Mesh and filters
Fasteners
Medical devices
Additive manufacturing (as feedstock wire)

Dimensions and Tolerances
Wire diameter range:
Typically 0.1 mm-6.35 mm (0.004”-0.25”)
Tolerances:
As per Table 1 in the standard, or agreed with purchaser.
Typical:
±0.013 mm (±0.0005″) for small diameter
±0.05 mm (±0.002″) for larger diameter
Ovality ≤ 50% of total tolerance
Wire form:
Straightened wire (cut to length)
Coil wire or spooled wire (plastic, steel, or fiber spools)
Manufacturing & Surface Finish
Wire may be drawn, rolled, or ground.
Surface finish:
Pickled, bright-drawn, or abrasively cleaned.
Free from cracks, inclusions, and contamination.
Surface oxidation is removed unless otherwise specified.

Mechanical properties depend on:
Wire diameter
Heat treatment (annealed or cold-worked)
Testing Requirements
Chemical analysis: Must conform to the grade-specific standard (e.g., ASTM B348 for Gr 5)
Tensile testing: Representative samples
Bend test (optional): Wire must withstand bending without cracking
Surface inspection: Free from harmful defects
Grain size: For some medical or high-spec applications
Marking and Certification
Each wire coil/spool must be marked with:
ASTM B863
Grade
Heat number
Size and length/weight
Manufacturer ID
Mill Test Report (MTR) includes:
Chemical composition

Typical Applications
Aerospace: Lock wire, spring wire, fasteners
Welding: TIG welding filler wire
Medical: Surgical wire, orthodontics, implant devices
Chemical : Mesh, screen filters, corrosion-resistant fasteners
Additive Manufacturing: Wire feedstock for wire-based 3D printing
